01About

Over 15 years across industry, international cooperation and entrepreneurship

Eddie Ajalcriña in a eucalyptus forest near Cusco
Cusco, 2024

Latin America has no shortage of science or biodiversity; what it lacks is turning them into business.

Eddie Ajalcriña is a Peruvian expert in the bioeconomy, bio-businesses and the circular economy; CEO of Redesign Lab, instructor at MIT Professional Education and co-author of the Bio Business Playbook.

Few people with aligned incentives take on that work. Eddie does it at Redesign Lab, the impact venture studio he co-founded in Lima, and has linked Amazonian value chains to Patagonia, Lacoste, Lululemon, Eileen Fisher and Hugo Boss. He treats these businesses as an investment opportunity rather than charity.

Before: sustainability at TASA (Breca Group) and at Alicorp-Vitapro across four countries; UNIDO-certified consultant.

↳Key concepts he promotes

Eco-generic
A product that invests like a regenerative one and sells like a generic, because nobody built its brand on purpose.
White elephants
Funded processing plants that sit idle because nobody is accountable for the whole business.
Critical territory
Where biodiversity is high and operations are fragile; a bio-business there must be designed differently.
Ancestral capital
The territory's non-monetary contributions are capital too, and should share in the profits.
Biological sovereignty
Capturing the value of biodiversity where it originates, instead of exporting it in bulk and buying back what others developed.
